10/6 Report and prediction
Saturday 6 November 2010
Report: After near-epic (only issue was the drained-out low tide, which filled in sufficiently before dark) OH freight-train barrels last night, we have smaller conditions plagued by N-NNW winds putting a little side-chop on it. More South-facing and protected breaks will hold the best waves today, but even exposed beaches may produce decent surf as well.
Prediction: The groundswell should continue, in some form, through today and into tomorrow. We are likely looking at continued North winds for the remainder of today. Winds currently look like they should take a more NNW-NW tilt tomorrow. Extreme tides are running, so you will have to strike a balance between lots and little water. Monitor sources of local weather for up-to-date wind reports and predictions.
Extended Forecast: Significantly smaller leftovers on Monday, possibly with more-favorable NW winds. Again, monitor sources of local weather for up-to-date wind reports and predictions. Check back here (first reference the Surf News section, above, since I can get updates posted there much quicker) for and update late-weekend or early work-week.

Andy Irons passes away
Normally I stick to local surf-related news, but...
By now, you have surely heard that 3x world champion Andy Irons has passed away. The cause of death is to be (officially) determined, but it appears he succumbed to Dengue Fever. Yes, there are other questionable circumstances, but I will not speculate on them.
You can visit Surfline, Transworld surf, the offical ASP website, and Billabong (among many others) for more info.
You may recall Andy and some of the Billabong crew visited our area last summer during Hurricane Bill and put on one hell of a demonstration of world-class surfing. If I can, I'll dig up and link some pics and post/link them here in the near future.
RIP Andy.

Quiver Downsizing: Boards for Sale
All boards located in Lavallette. Contact sak@eastcoastsurfer.com
6'10" x 20" x 2.5" Fly (Paul Baymore hand-shape, Glassed-off epoxy glassing). In very good+ condition. No dings or dents on bottom or rails, minimal denting on deck, one pro-repaired ding on tail that never took in water. Not a funshape- a shortboard-y outline with a round tail. Has traction and noseguard. Comes with JC1 fins and a leash, so it is the complete package and ready to go. $275.

5’10” …lost Round Nose Fish. No dings, a few minor dents on the deck. I bought this board advertised as a 5’8” sight-unseen, turns out it was actually a 5’10” which is a touch too big for my tastes. Pulled the dimensions, going to have my friend Rick at Gallery Surfboards re-scale it down a few inches, but gotta sell this one first. Comes with a set of new M5’s for $350. If you want to supercharge it, I can swap out a set of Carbon twin fins and small fiberglass trailer for an additional $25.

And finally, the 6’5” Bonzer. Moonlight glassing, rock-solid quality, absolutely zero dents on the bottom and only the slightest dimpling on the deck (we are talking really solid glassing here). No dings whatsoever except a spider-cracking on the rail near the tail that has been sealed.
Dimensions are not written on the board, but I am pretty sure they are 6'5" x 18 3/4" x 2 3/8" I do believe I can make out the serial number through the pigment, so if precise dimensions are needed, maybe the Campbell Brothers will have the info in their records.
The rails are quite foiled down by Campbell Bros. standards (most bonzers are too beefy for my likes), but still has plenty of float and paddle for my 6'0" 185-190 frame. Comes with 7" True Ames Bonzer fin. $400 FIRM.

Saturday 10 July report and prediction
Saturday 10 July 2010
Sorry for the lack up a recent update; I have been sick as a dog and basically offline for a while.
Report: Some ESE windswell in the waist+ range and semi-clean with sideshore/slightly offshore S-SSW winds.
Prediction: The wind angle could improve if/when T-storms roll through later today. Consider the tides; higher tides will surely swamp this swell as it is neither big nor that powerful. Continued ESE windswell for Sunday with variable winds: currently looking like sideshore NW early and settling into a more Westerly angle later in the morning or early afternoon. Beware a possibe windshift to the S-SSE in the afternoon as things heat up. Monitor sources of local weather information for up-to-date wind forecasts.
Extended Forecast: The swell could peek into Monday, with offshore winds currently predicted for early AM, going sideshore S-SSE as things heat up. Potential new round of building windswell for mid-week. Check back late weekend/early work-week for an update.

Steadfast Films
While tinkering around with my iPod this past weekend, and looking to load some surf-related footage onto it, I remembered that the Steadfast Films production "Making for the Sea" was a REALLY good downloadable surf film released a few years ago. It features NY and NJ surfers escaping their hectic, urban environments by "making for the sea" to find solace and release in the ocean. It is a "Shelter"-esque film and well-worth seeing.
A quick check of my bookmarked favorites revealed that the site is still active, the download is still available, and since it is in quicktime format, it is easily loaded on an iPod. Download it and view it; you won't regret it. I do recommend downloading the "Large" version, even if you are going to view it in a small window as the "small" download is very small and pixelates even on my iPod screen.
Vist the page to download the film here:

Or simply watch it here:

A letter to Surfer Magazine
Concerning their recent article on Dean Randazzo.
Would be surprised if they publish it, but I guess we'll see.
In what, to many, may be one of the most important and poignant features (Survivor: the Dean Randazzo Story) you published as of late, you present a photo of Funtown Pier in Seaside Heights, and captioned it as Dean’s stomping grounds of Ocean City, NJ. The structures are located nowhere near each other geographically, look nothing alike, and host completely disjunct surf communities and dissimilar surf cultures. To not bother to make the effort to get such basic facts correct is an insult to Dean, his story of comeuppance, and his current battle. To put in in Cali-centric terms with which you might identify, it is akin to taking a picture of Rincon and dubbing it Steamer Lane; both breaks have quality surfers and quality waves, but for a professional magazine to mix up the two is not justifiable.
I could be wrong, but one can not help but jump to the conclusion that this blatant error is the result of pure laziness or unprofessionalism on the part of the person responsible for assigning the images to the story; did he or she just grab some stock image from some neglected and forgotten “New Jersey” file folder, slap the “Ocean City” caption on it, declare “good enough” and call it a day? It is not the first time I have seen such mixed-up captioning or downright wrong information about the Garden State, its surf, and its surfers, but this one stings a bit more because, quite frankly, it was important to get it correct, dammit. The break where one learns the ropes, forges ties, and makes one’s mark means a lot to us; such cavalier misidentification can easily be interpreted as an insult to the man, the crew, and the locale itself.
Sorry if this all sounds a bit harsh, but as the article says, we tend to get “up in your face around here” and call screw-ups for what they are.

59 dollar Water Video Camera?
I am sure I am late to the game on this one. But I got an amazon email today on 10 ten tech thingys for sale. I saw this:
for 59 bucks seems pretty killa. It isn't HD but it is DV quality video and Might look good on the web. Could be fun if you made a fiberglass mount for this thing on a longboard or even attached it to a helmet or stick it where ever you choose.
I remember Chenzo and I dreamed about putting our underwater housing on a longboard but the housing and the video camera alone cost us in the 2000 plus range. So if that fell off the board we would of been sunk. This is a much better alternative. I am sure there are others out there that are better but can they beat the 59 dollar price tag.
If anyone has one or gets one send me some video!

FOR SALE 6'5" Campbell Brothers Bonzer
File this under the last F*(king thing I want to do, but I've been hit by a series of expensive bad-luck events lately (which was topped-off by my parked car being totaled by a disoriented senior citizen earlier this week), so I'm tapping my quiver in attempt to make up the deficits I'm running.
So, it pains me to do this, but:
6'5" Bonzer for sale, located in Lavallette, NJ. Moonlight glassing, rock-solid quality, absolutely zero dents on the bottom and only the slightest dimpling on the deck (we are talking really solid glassing here).
No dings whatsoever except a spider-cracking on the rail near the tail. I included a picture with no sense of scale except the weave of the glass visible through the resin. It is small (only an inch or so) and apparently only the gloss/fill coat (no leakage evident, but I covered it with electrical tape just to be safe). I'm going to try to seal it up and gloss it out once the weather warms up a tad.
UPDATE: The tail is sealed up and I'm dropping the price to $500 with both fins included. This is $75 off what is posted on craigslist, ebay, etc.
