Coil shapers featured on Surfline feature

As you all know, I'm a die-hard fan of Coil technology. Surfline just ran a feature on Brevard County, FL, the East Coast epicenter of surfboard R&D, and the Coil Crew was represented on slides #5 and 7.

Check out the whole feature at Shaper's Alley: Brevard County

brand-new Coils for $449 (!)

PSA for my fellow NJ coil-addicts: No Flat Earth is closing doors by year's end. There are two brand new Coils for $449 in there. One is a 5'8" M80 with futures and the other is a 5'7" non-descript model with FCS fusions that looks like it might be a light-bump-squash M80. Both are thrusters and both have volumes of 0.85, I believe. Insane deals; I'm tempted myself by the 5'8". I might drop by tomorrow and take pics of both boards and post them here. Lots of other gear at 50-70% off as well.

Not my cup of Tea but it might be yours! Big Wave Surfing

I am not much for big wave surfing but this is actually highly entertaining in the "cringe factor" catagory.

"Australian charger Mark Mathews (above) and his cohorts Ryan Hipwood, Richie Vas and Laurie Towner are the world's leading slab hunters, and according to Paul, "they're among the craziest surfers alive, and talented too, which is a scary combination. Photographer Tim Bonython stays busy just trying to keep up with them. After a mind-boggling day in Tasmania earlier this year, the boys were walking tall having conquered the ferocious Shipstern's Bluff with a handful of historic rides. Read more...

A friend of mine posted this on facebook. Pretty insane left tube rides. A little about this guys from their Site www.french_connexion.tv

We hope you enjoy what we put up with the help of Jimmy who is the man behind the camera and the edits! Have a good surf, Marco, Joan and Charly!"

Death of the Independent Surf Film maker.

I beg to differ on the Laptop and DSLR (what about software and lenses?)costing only 2-3 grand but I agree Independent Surf Films are dead with all the rest of surf films being free on the web (and they are damn good too). It is hard to even compete. Hell it was hard to compete when it was thriving hahahah

Anyways good little video. 100,000 budget though ouch. I thought my budget was big.

VIRGINIA BEACH

East Coast Surfing Championship officials have announced that they are closing the weekend portion of the 49th annual event at 6 p.m. this evening.

Crews will start taking down tents, scaffolding and skate ramps at that time.

“Virginia is in a state of emergency, so we’re pulling the trigger,” said George Alcaraz of Resort Management

State of Emergency in NJ

Well in case you haven't heard or living under a rock. I just wanted to inform you that Chris Christie has declared State of Emergency in NJ as of 11am Thursday 8-25-11 because of Hurricane Irene.

To read more:

Below is a good list to have:

The following are suggested actions to be taken prior to the storm's arrival:

  • Check battery-powered equipment such as radios and flashlights. Buy extra batteries.
  • Secure outdoor objects that might become caught in the wind.
  • Keep your car fueled should evacuation be necessary.
  • Be aware of where evacuation routes are located.
  • Stock up on non-perishable food items and water.
  • Stay tuned to a local radio or television station for the latest National Weather Service advisories as well as instructions from local officials.
Also don't forget to have plenty of Candles on hand in case the powers goes out, a cooler full of ice in case, plenty of water, and don't forget an extra cooler for Beer. (drink responsibly) I would suggest a beer but we do not have a beer sponsor as of yet =)

Stay safe

EVENT: Singlefins, Boardwalks and Story Talks II on Friday July 22nd

Dick Meseroll et al. (equally-legendary photogs Donald Cresetillo, Bruce Chrisner, as well as young-guns Seth Stafford and Rich McMullin, etc.) are presenting their second installment (the first happening last year) Singlefins, Boardwalks and Story Talks at the Tuckerton Seaport on 22 July 2011 at the Tuckerton Seaport (Exit 58 off the GSP).

From what I can gather from multiple online sources, the outdoor event kicks off at 6PM, doors to the indoor event (slideshow) are at 7PM, and admission is free. It was a great event last year (under similar balmy conditions to boot!) and promises to be a repeat. Check out the Seaport website for more info: www.tuckertonseaport.org

Relayed message from Surfrider concerning Beach Access

Relayed message from Surfrider:

Dear Surfrider Supporter,

This monthly update will be short and sweet.

Thank you to all the volunteers that came out to pack the Asbury Park City Council meeting and the over 250 that came out to our Memorial Day rally. We have sent a clear message to the AP City Council and our statewide representatives that we will not allow them to turn the north end beach of Asbury Park into high-end townhomes. Check out the photo from the rally on www.saveasburypark.com . Check the site again soon for more photos from Saturday's rally and campaign next steps. If you have not signed up for our Save Asbury Park campaign e-mail updates, you can do that at the site as well.

Access is now the focus. This Thursday will be the fourth and final public hearing on the new (no) access rules. This is the only hearing that is being held in the evening. We need to turn out our supporters and all beach users in force! This new rule is disastrous for some locations and is a step in the wrong direction for all beaches. By disregarding the Public Trust Doctrine the DEP and Governor Christie are making our public beaches less accessible, not more. Pass the details of this hearing on to everyone you know. The public hearing is at 7 pm on Thursday June 2nd at the Long Beach Township Court Room (6805 Long Beach Boulevard - Brant Beach), Long Beach Island.

If you want to submit written comments, please check the details here . Written comments must be submitted by Friday, June 3rd.

Don't forget about our Chapter meeting this month on June 11th at Monmouth Beach Cultural Center. Starting at 10 am we will have guest speaker Cara Muscio from Rutgers to talk about rain gardens and water quality.

Keep up the good fight and I hope to see you soon!

Jon Coen penned a great article (which is accompanied by some nice photos as well) for ESM regarding his trip to Maine to craft a board at the Grain Surfboards factory.

Thursday 03/24/11 report and prediction

Thursday 24 March 2011
Report: Onshore NE winds and sloppy E-ENE windswell.
Prediction: Winds are predicted to slowly rotate around to the N-NNW as the day goes on, so we may see a cleanup/semi-cleanup late-day, depending on the local coastline angle and exposure to the winds.
Extended Forecast: Wave heights are predicted to drop off a notch or so but the period is predicted to lengthen a bit for Friday AM as the low pushes off the coast. Winds are predicted to come around more NNW-NW for Friday, so SE-ESE-facing breaks should see clean conditions, with more East-facing breaks potentially having side-offshore texture.
Weekend Outlook: Offshore/semi-offshore winds (between WNW and NNW) are predicted for the weekend, but minimal swell is on the charts; maybe a little leftover background bump early Saturday, but not all that much else.
