12-29-2007

By Chris
As the tide dropped out this afternoon the swell died as well but there were still weak waist to chest high sets pushing through at the north end of LBI.

12-27-2007

A few shots from this afternoon in Cedars. Glassy head high waves coming in with a few bigger sets. Never really got groomed by any offshores so it was pretty peaky. Surfer is Ryan Brower. More shots to come later.

Christmas Eve report

By Chris:

LBI:
Definite chest+ swell in the water this am, but was getting hurt by a variety of factors. Wind is taking that SW tilt that can either keep the north end decently clean or ruin it if the wind gets strong (as it is forecast to). Big full moon tide this morning as well. The SE direction of the swell is also not helping matters with a lot of closeouts that probably are going to become more prominent as the tide drops out and the wind picks up. If you have the option for the afternoon, I'd head north for the better swell and wind angles.

South Jersey on 12/16/07

By Chris:

For those who were wondering what South Jersey looked like on Sunday, it seemed very dependent on location. There are decent shots from Ocean City and Atlantic City but somewhere in the state, Rob Kelly and Luke Ditella scored. Shots from Rob.

Manasquan Classic Longboard competition Sunday, Sept. 9th

A message from the NJ Chapter of Surfrider Foundation:

On Sunday, Sept. 9th, we will yet again pay homage to the sport of kings at the Manasquan Classic! This is a rain or shine event... and no hurricane date either! There are divisions for everyone and, as always, the ONLY rules are contestants must ride a pre-1967 longboard (3'' overhead), no leashes and no complaints - pretty much anything goes because it''s all about the aloha!

Check-in begins at 7:00am, first heat at 8:00am. Qualifying boards will be available for use, so come on down - entry fee is only $35, which includes a contest t-shirt and the chance to win bragging rights over your buds! Net proceeds go to the Surfrider Foundation''s Jersey Shore Chapter.

Entry forms can be downloaded from http://www.surfriderjsc.org/

"Pick Up 3"

Featured on page 134 of the recent issue of Surfing Magazine (The 2nd “Green Issue”, Volume 43. October 2007) is Cobi Emery, a young kid who is publicizing the concept of picking up three items of trash when you leave the beach. This is something I have been doing for years (not necessarily 3 items, sometimes more, sometimes less), and something we should all practice.

Check out Codi’s website at www.pickup3.org

He also made a video promoting the concept that can be seen here: http://www.eastcoastsurfer.com/videos/pickup3/

As a environmental scientist, I have to mention that this is more of an issue of beautification and removal of items that may be hazardous to wildlife (examples: birds and turtles strangled in 6-pack rings and fish and cetaceans choking on plastic bags and baloons) and will not solve the more insidious forms of ocean pollution (specifically, chemical and microbial contaminants), but it definitely promotes awareness and a way of thinking that should be instilled into everyday life of anyone who enjoys and feels tied to the ocean.

Thanks for listening.

Ocean County Beachfill Meeting

From the local chaper of Surfrider Foundation. Info below copied and pasted from http://localswell.com/SurfriderNewPage.html :

The Surfrider Foundation, Jersey Shore Chapter will have a meeting at Pop’s Garage at 6th Ave and Rt. 35 North in Normandy Beach on Wednesday August 1st at 7 PM for people interested in changing or modifying the plans for beach replenishment in Ocean County. The Army Corps has a plan to replenish beaches from Bay Head to Seaside and we want to make sure recreation is not impacted by this.

We are looking for volunteers to help educate their town leaders about the negative effects of beachfill and alternatives. See you there.
